Research
Institute of Environmental Law (RIEL) of Wuhan University
is currently the largest institute specialized in research
and education of environmental law in China, and it is also
one of the Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social
Science in University approved by the Ministry of Education,
and the Secretariat of Environment and Resources Law Society
of China Law Society. RIEL was founded jointly by former Leading
Group for Environmental Protection of the State Council and
former Ministry of Higher Education in 1981, and is now under
the co-leadership of the State Environmental Protection Agency
(SEPA) of China and Wuhan University.
The major tasks of the RIEL include: Doing study on the basic
theories of environment and resources law & policy and
major research programs arising in the practice; Training
senior professionals in environment and resources law, and
providing training programs in environment and resources law,
policy and management for governmental officials at various
levels; Taking part in environment and resources legislative
and consultative activities at both national and local levels
of the governments; Engaging in academic cooperation and exchange
with institutions and individuals both at home and abroad.
